Effective Earache Home Remedies
When your child gets an earache it does not necessarily mean that you have to rush to the doctor because there are earache home remedies well within your reach. There are several ways to alleviate the pain and more often than not you need look no farther than your medicine cabinet, pantry or herb garden. Regular things you have around the house can be used with care. From your medicine cabinet or first aid kit you can utilize hydrogen peroxide, vicks vaporub, tiger balm ointment, mouthwash, teething gel and your ever reliable warm compress. From your kitchen or pantry you have herbal teas, garlic, onion, ginger, olive oil and chewing gum and from your herb garden you can use basil as first aid earache treatment.
From the Pantry
The first step to take is chew gum as chewing gum usually clears the ear canal which may be clogged due to a variety of reasons. Another one of those easy earache home remedies is to use a warm compress by holding it against the affected ear. There are several kinds of warm compress the most common of which is the gel type that you warm in the microwave. You can also use the compress made of grains or a hot water bottle. Caution must be taken that the temperature is not too hot or it will burn your skin and aggravate your pain in the process.
Many cooking ingredients are also effective earache home remedies. Garlic, ginger or onion can be prepared as a poultice. Just pound the garlic, ginger or onion until juice is extracted, make a paste out of it, warm a little, put in a soft cloth and use this on the affected ear. Basil and turmeric is used the same way you use the garlic, ginger or onion as an earache remedy. Olive oil is applied like mineral oil wherein a little is warmed and dropped into the ears.
From the Medicine Cabinet
Earache home remedies found in the medicine cabinet can be hydrogen peroxide, mouthwash, vicks vaporub, tiger balm or the teething gel, just put a drop or two on a cotton ball and put the cotton ball in the affected ear. This should bring relief and lessen the pain. Mineral oil can be used two ways to ease the ache that ear infection can bring. Prior to swimming, coat the ear with the oil to protect the ear. But if an earache already occurs, the remedy is to warm some mineral oil, check for the right temperature and with the use of an eye dropper, drop some into the ear.
When all else fails, a pain killer like a paracetamol or ibruprofen always works. Sometimes these can be used in conjunction with one or more of the earache home remedies mentioned above. Taken with warm herbal tea or a bowl of hot chicken soup, it promotes general well being and relief from pain almost always follows. It is also prudent to stay away from spicy or oily deep fried food which can cause irritation and add vitamin C rich food to your diet. One or more of these earache home remedies will ease the discomfort but if pain persists, have it checked by a doctor.
